September 10, 2001 was a Monday. A regular, grumpy Monday. Back to work. Nose to the grindstone. Rejoin the rat race. In short, it was a cliché.
I don't really remember what I did that day. I can guess because I remember so well what happened the next day. I am sure I was happy because on Sunday my Colts had opened the season with a 45-24 win over the Jets, and the Braves had beaten the Cubbies at Wrigley Field 9-5. The next Braves' game, played at Shea Stadium, would be very memorable.
World news was depressing but not very engaging. Nobody much noticed that 11 people were killed by Islamic militants in a mosque in northern Algeria.
And who cared that an Afghan opposition leader was hurt by a assassin's bomb?
In Sacramento, a crazed security guard went on a rampage: 5 Killed; Heavily Armed Man Sought read the headline.
The economy was floundering despite a 10-year $1.3 trillion tax cut having already been passed. Republicans wanted more tax cuts. Democrats were skeptical.
Justice Souter claimed he could have changed Justice Kennedy's vote on Bush v. Gore if he'd had "one more day."
The US was enforcing no-fly zones against Saddam Hussein to protect Kurdish strongholds in northern Iraq and Shiite areas in the south.
In entertainment, Jessica Simpson was shedding her wholesome image (if not pounds), and the forgettable film "The Musketeer" was No. 1 at the box office. "West Wing" was winning lots of technical Emmy Awards. And millions tuned in that night as the Broncos beat the Giants on top-rated Monday Night Football.
September 10, 2001 was an ordinary day, a cliché. It would be the last ordinary day for awhile.
